Girl (7) Scarred for Life by Dog

Summary:

A girl, seven years old, was attacked by a Staffordshire Terrier out of the blue. The girl was taken to the hospital where they tried to mend the injuries, but unfortunately the girl will probably always be scarred in her face. She is back in her own home, but very affraid to go out and even more affraid of dogs. The dog in question is going to be put down and the owner of the dog feels very responsible, luckily for him, the parents of the little girl don't hold him responsible. This event has raised a lot of discussion about the keeping of dogs and especially in front of kids.

Opinion:

This is a terrible tragedy for the girl and especially her fear of dogs will never entirely go away I fear, but I don't like the way people are slashing out at dogs. Accidents like this make people realize that having a dog in the house brings a risk with it. I think tht people should always remember that, it is not a stuffed animal, it is a wild animal with basic instincts and it does not think the same way humans do. This means that they don't respond the way we would, they respond on instict, just like a wolf. So there is always a risk when you have a dog in the house, the only thing you can do is realize that and anticipate on that.

  1. I could not agree more. Almost every time a dog has bitten someone, the blame is on the dog. However, I believe the owner is to blame, for he is the one who raised and trained the animal. Like you said, dogs are no stuffed animals, but creatures with instincts. Often it is said that the attack came out of the blue, but we humans just miss the signs visible when a dog, just following its instinct, is going to act out.

  2. Good thing the dog has been put to sleep, have you seen the photos of the girl and that savage beast? What surprises me most is the fact the owner is not held responsible by the father. If an animal like that attacked my little boy, I would sue the owner for all he has!

  3. Of course the girls is afraid of this after an accident like this. However accident like this have to be prevented. The only way to do this is not to leave a dog alone with a child. Even if the dog is very reliable if something scares him, he might react in an unexpected way. A good Dutch initiative is the dvd "de blauwe hond" This is a interactive dvd which learns children how to behave around dogs.
